Harmful Traditional Practices

VOAW has raised awareness about Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) since 2010. HTP are forms of violence which are accepted as part of the cultural practice in specific countries and contexts. Examples of HTP are forced (child)marriage, honor related violence or honor killings, abandonment in country of origin and any other form of violence or force to uphold traditional norms. These are taboo themes in the context of closed communities in the Netherlands. VOAW raises awareness about these taboo themes within Rotterdam by organizing dialogues and engaging men and youth. In necessary cases, VOAW also advises the municipality of Rotterdam and individual cases of other organizations when necessary. VOAW implements activities about taboo themes since 2010 and is a specialized field organization with regard to this topic in the region of Rotterdam-Rijnmond.
